Why should our church become an Eco Church?
Becoming an Eco Church is a powerful way to live out our faith, care for God’s creation, and inspire our congregation to engage in meaningful action. Here are some key reasons why joining the Eco Church network is a valuable step for your parish:
(1) A Theological Statement on Creation Care
Becoming an Eco Church affirms our biblical responsibility to steward God’s creation.
It signals to our congregation that creation care is an integral part of Christian discipleship.
It aligns with the Five Marks of Mission, particularly the call to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
(2) Opportunities for Youth and Young Adults
Eco Church membership provides access to environmental leadership opportunities for young people.
Youth connected to Eco Churches can attend environmental camps such as He Māhuri Tōtara for free, helping to form the next generation of Christian environmental leaders.
(3) Practical Resources to Support Creation Care
Eco Church provides tools, resources, and guides to help churches integrate sustainable practices into their buildings, worship, and outreach.
Access to the Eco Church Action Planner helps churches set goals and take tangible steps towards sustainability.
(4) A Network of Support and Encouragement
Joining the network connects your church with other like-minded communities engaged in creation care.
This support can be crucial for individuals passionate about environmental issues who may otherwise feel isolated in their efforts to bring about change.
(5) A Powerful Witness to the Wider Church and Society
Taking action on creation care demonstrates to the wider community that the church is engaged in relevant, urgent global issues.
It provides a positive witness to non-Christians, showing that faith and sustainability go hand in hand.
It encourages other churches to consider their own role in caring for God’s creation.
(6) Strengthening Community Engagement
Participating in local conservation projects fosters stronger relationships with the wider community.
It provides opportunities for outreach and partnership with schools, councils, and environmental organisations.
(7) No Financial Barrier to Join
There is currently no cost to be part of the network. However, starting in September 2025, we will introduce a small tiered annual contribution of $50-200 per year to support the ongoing work of Eco Church.
Churches unable to contribute can opt out, ensuring accessibility for all.
